Preaching Minister
Doug Dykstra

Doug Dykstra has been the Preaching Minister at Mid-Lakes since 1994. He was born in 1946 in Munster, Indiana, which is in the northwest corner of Indiana, at the southernmost tip of Lake Michigan.

Doug went to Christian elementary and high schools, and after graduation, entered immediately into Lincoln Christian College on a ministerial program. He held a variety of jobs to put himself through college, and graduated from LCC in 1968. He had already started preaching by the middle of his junior year of college at a little church in central

Illinois, and has been preaching ever since.

Doug and Cheryl were married in December of 1966, and he thinks of her as his best friend and partner.

Doug and Cheryl came to MCC on Easter Sunday, 1994, and have thoroughly enjoyed serving here. The church in those days was small and struggling, but the people really wanted to do something for the Kingdom. In order for this to happen, a lot of changes had to take place -- the church was open to change, and grew rapidly as a result. Now we have a wide variety of worship services and study opportunities, to bless a wide variety of people.

Part of Doug’s dreams has been fulfilled now that we’ve moved into our beautiful new building. But, the dream is far larger than that: our next mission is to fill it up with people who are eager to worship our Lord and King. Each weekend, we enjoy 3 worship services and two Bible Studies, and there are studies for all ages throughout the weekdays, too. In addition, we have a first-rate Christian School that meets every school day – what a joy!

MLCC is committed to becoming a powerful influence in our community for Christ. Our goal to become ever more effective at drawing people of every age group to a closer walk with Christ. And, we need to do it fast...because we believe our Lord could return at any moment.

Office Manager
Cheryl Dykstra

Cheryl Dykstra is the wife of our MCC's preaching minister, Doug Dykstra, and serves MCC as the Office Manager, Teacher, and coordinating the events of Mid-Lakes activities.

She grew up in Indiana, near Chicago, and attended Lincoln Christian College. She loves serving the church alongside of Doug. Since Cheryl has a passion of music, she has taken the awesome responsibility of organizing the music ministry at the church.

Cheryl really enjoys all that she does and looks forward to going to "work." Her attitude is: "It's a privilege to have a job that makes us a partner with God, and that all I do has a chance to effect someone for eternity."

Cheryl remembers when she and Doug first came to Mid-Lakes. The elders knew that she had a musical background. In fact, she used to teach it in a Christian school. So they told her, "Your mission, should you choose to accept it, is to bring our church into a mode that would be attractive to younger families raising children." It proved to be a real challenge, but Cheryl adds, "It's been lots of fun to see the great attitudes in the church folk as we have gradually added youth and family-friendly aspects to the worship services and music."

Cheryl writes, "We've all had to make a few concessions here and there. At Mid-Lakes, we take the attitude that if there isn't something in one of the weekend services that isn't our preference, we probably aren't presenting the balance in our services that we should. Our desire is to have a point of connection for every age group, while still keeping the dignity and power of worship. Our leaders have the wisdom to know that the kingdom of God is bigger than the personal preferences of anyone of us. So Christ is being honored in many ways today at Mid-Lakes Christian Church."

Sports and Young Adults Minister
Brent Elliott

MCC is committed to seeing people come to know Christ and build relationships. One way we seek to do that is through our Sports Ministry and Young Adult Ministry. Brent Elliott leads both of these ministries. Brent was originally called to MCC to serve as Youth Minister in 1997, but now is serving as the Sports Minister.

Brent was born in Chattanooga, Tennessee. When he was two, his family decided to move to Eustis, Florida. Brent graduated from Eustis High School in 1995. He then went on to Florida Christian College

in Kissimmee, FL. His interests include spending time with his family, fishing, playing sports and watching the Miami Hurricanes beat the Seminoles and Gators.

Brent married his wife, Michelle, on December 18, 1999. They now live in Eustis with their two kids, Wes and Caylyn. Brent and Michelle have a passion to see the church grow and people come to Christ. The Sports Ministry offers opportunities for people of every skill level. There are also a wide variety of sports and activities, including: basketball, softball, volleyball, martial arts, aerobics, fishing tournaments, golf tournaments, soccer, football and many other things.

Minister of Creative Arts
Tim Wanless

Tim was born in Madison, Wisconsin and lived there for almost thirty years
before coming to Florida in 1996. He worked in many different jobs before entering ministry full-time. In his twenties and early thirties he worked as a banker, construction worker, produce clerk, security guard, and even sold cars for a while. But none of these jobs ever gave him complete satisfaction. He helped with the worship team at Mid-Lakes Christian Church and found it fulfilling. So at the age of 32 he decided to attend Florida Christian College and earn a B.S. in Music

Ministry. While in college he worked for a local church in Kissimmee, Florida and gained even more experience leading worship. After graduation in 2005, Tim was called to ministry in Naples, Florida and worked almost four years helping to create a Contemporary worship service from scratch. In February of 2007 he finally returned to his home church here at Mid-Lakes and is leading worship, creating videos, and adding excitement to the worship services! Tim is married to Tammy and they have two children, Justin and Savannah.

Meet the MCC Elders
The elders at MLCC are carefully selected from within the church. In order to be an elder, they must be mature in their faith, and have obviously demonstrated by their life that they are faithful to their commitment to Christ over the years. They will be strong in serving, tithing, loving, and showing positive attitudes. Their responsibility is to lead the church in harmony with the staff. They participate in the general oversight of the ministry, advising and directing the staff in a partnership that has worked wonderfully well over the years.

Chairman of the elders
Dick Mills

Dick was born in Michigan, raised in Ohio, and spent half a career each in Indiana and Illinois so he is definitely a mid-westerner, although after eight years, he now feels like a Floridian.

Upon leaving Miami University in Ohio, Dick married Dodie and was immediately drafted into the Marine Corps. Dick and Dodie had one boy (deceased) and three girls so Dodie was a "stay at home" mom. The have nine grandchildren and ten great-grandchildren.

Dick's business career consisted of two lengthy positions, one with ITT as Director of Operations Control and one with Abbott Laboratories as Manager of Manufacturing Engineering Operations. He was responsible for Strategic Planning, Program Management, Industrial Engineering and Contract Administration.

As a result of frequent moves, Dick has had the opportunity to serve as elder for five different churches in Indiana, Illinois and Florida. He has served as Board Chairman, Treasurer and Financial Secretary. He has also taught for many years and filled the pulpit when needed.

Dick is happy and honored to be a part of the vibrant, growing work at Mid-Lakes.

Bob joined the United States Marine Corps right out of high school and traveled as a Combat Engineer throughout Asia and Europe. After the military most of his career has been spent in the financial industry educating people where to place their investments. In 1993 Bob and Connie made the greatest decision of their lives, coming to

Christ. August of 2003 Bob and his family moved to Florida and a week later they became a part of the Mid-Lakes Christian Church family. Both Bob and Connie enjoy working as youth sponsors in the MCC youth group and other ministries throughout the church. Personal Note from Bob:

Meet the MCC Deacons
All believers are to serve in the church in some capacity, but the deacons are committed to serving more actively. When something needs to be done, it is the deacons’ ministry to do it until relieved by a ministry team. Doug calls the deacons the church’s “911 team.” The word “deacon” in the early church meant “servant.” Their role is to do ministry more so than lead -- however, some deacons will head up various “ministry teams” within the church, even though that isn’t part of their job description.

Hudge Sedlmeyer

Hudge has been a member of Mid-Lakes since 2001 and has served as a deacon since 1999.

Outside of performing the duties of a deacon, Hudge also serves as MCC's clearinghouse for background checks on those who work among our children.

Hudge grew up in Johnstown, PA, leaving as soon as he graduated from high school to join the Air Force. After his enlistment, he went to work with the CIA. In fact, he met his wife Frankie in the CIA. After 27 years working as, dare we say it--a

spook--he continued as a civilian contractor until 1995, at which time he retired for good.

Hudge enjoys being a deacon. He writes, "It's challenging, but it provides great fellowship with the other deacons who work together as a close-knit team. I feel as though the entire church is my family."

Bill Daniels

Bill was raised in the United Baptist Church in Paintsville, Kentucky. He served in the U.S. Army in Korea and Germany during the Korean War. After an honorable discharge he returned to Kentucky and worked as a plumber/pipe fitter for 30+ years in Ashland, KY. He became a member of Russell Christian Church in 1982.

After his first wife's passing, he married Janet in 1986 and became a deacon at RCC, becoming involved in various maintenance projects and the Seniors group (Sonshiners). They moved to Leesburg in November of 2000 and immediately

joined MLCC. He was ordained as a deacon in January, 2002.

Bill says, "One of our biggest concerns in relocating to Florida was finding a Bible-believing church. We immediately found that and much more in Mid-Lakes with all the warmth and friendliness here."

Dan Stephens

Born and raised in Olean, NY, Dan joined the Air Force in 1956. After his discharge, he stayed in Tampa, where he met his wife Donna and they were married in 1960. They relocated to the St. Louis area where they raised two daughters.

Dan retired from Ford Motor Company in May of 1998 after 32 years of work as a final inspector in Quality Control. They moved to the Tavares area in 1999 and prayed for God to place them in a teaching church. They felt Doug's teaching would help them continue to grow in the Lord. In July of 1999 Dan was baptized by a close friend and his

passion for serving the Lord has not stopped.

Dan was appointed deacon in December 1999. When it comes to feeding our flock you will surely find him in the kitchen; some call him "Deacon Dan the Cookin' Man". He has found a real desire for mission work and has made several trips to Haiti to help the missionaries. He also serves on the Mission Committee. He was instrumental in helping get Adventure Christian Academy’s thrift center (Adventure Thrift Center) up and running. The word 'servant' truly fits Dan's desire to serve the Lord and he is very honored to be a deacon.

Paul Livek

Paul has been attending Mid-Lakes since September of 2000 and was appointed deacon in December 2003.

While there, he has served as Sunday school superintendent, trustee, youth leader, and deacon.

Willie and Pat were married in 1946 and have two children, Darrell and Freda. They have 10 grandchildren and 12 grandchildren.

Willie started his working career in the commercial printing business while he was still in high school and retired after 46 years in 1991. During their retirement travels, Willie and Pat enjoyed their visit to Florida so much, they decided to by a home there and became official “snow birds,” now spending 7 months in Florida and 5 months in Indiana. Friends soon introduced them to Mid-Lakes Church and in 2000 they became members.

The Lord has blessed me with good health for over 75 years and I am happy to serve the Lord by helping care for the 15 acres of grounds the church occupies, therefore being blessed again by being able to get plenty of exercise, fresh air and sunshine.

Charlie Fox

We visited the church at Mid-Lakes in September 2005. The welcome atmosphere and friendly faces made us feel like this was home. We attended Discover Mid-Lakes Class and became members in January 2007. My earliest memory of church was attending the First Methodist Church of Mount Vernon, New York. Where I was awarded a Bible for reciting Bible verses. My Dad was a policeman and after he retired in 1941 we moved in 1942 to Milford, Connecticut. I graduated from Milford High School in 1950. I became a member of the Milford Church of Christ Congregational in 1951. After working a year and a half at Edgcomb Steel of

New England, I enrolled in 1952 at Stetson University in DeLand, Florida, graduating in 1956. I started working with the Office of Auditor General of the State of Florida that same year retiring in 1991 after 35 years. During that time I met my wife Nancy while on assignment in Tavares and we were married in December 1959. We have three children, sons, Kerry and Robert and daughter Genta. We attended the First Baptist Church of Tavares until 2001, and New Beginnings Christian Fellowship from 2002 to August 2005. Nancy was a Lake County School Teacher, retiring in 2003. In my retirement years I have done volunteer work at churches, worked on the Wooton Wonderland Playground Project and presently serve on the City of Tavares Public Library Advisory Board.
